Please keep in... --- - Published: 2022-07-14 - Modified: 2023-10-10 - URL: https://balhofforthodontics.com/common-orthodontic-issues-lafayette/ The patient started treatment at age 11 and wore braces for 26 months. He loves his new smile. The patient sucked her thumb as a young child. She started treatment at age 13. She had braces and a special appliance called a crib to retrain the tongue, for 28 months. Now she can bite the lettuce out of a sandwich. This adult patient, age 25, required braces and jaw surgery to correct his severe overbite, with treatment taking two years. His problem could have been corrected without surgery if he had been treated before he was a teenager. This patient's lateral incisors were congenitally missing. She had braces for 20 months to move the teeth into their correct positions, then the missing teeth were replaced with bonded "Maryland" bridges. The patient's underbite was causing her jaw joint discomfort and excessive wear patterns on her teeth. After about 30 months of treatment starting at age 32, she now finds smiling and chewing much easier. Patient was bothered by the spaces between his teeth. Braces closed the spaces and gave him an ideal bite in 24 months. Special glued-in retainers help keep the spaces closed. At age ten, patient had a big overjet with the top teeth protruding beyond the bottom. She had two phases of treatment in Lafayette. The first helped her jaws to grow more harmoniously and the second aligned her teeth and bite. At age 13, she was proudly displaying her new smile. The patient's parents were concerned about... --- - Published: 2022-07-14 - Modified: 2023-05-03 - URL: https://balhofforthodontics.com/orthodontic-emergencies-lafayette/ You might be surprised to learn that you may be able to solve many problems yourself temporarily until you can get to our office in Lafayette. Two-phase orthodontic treatment is a specialized process that combines tooth straightening and physical, facial changes. The purpose of two-phase treatment is to maximize the opportunity to accomplish the ideal healthy, functional, and aesthetic result that will remain stable throughout your child's life. WHAT IF TREATMENT IS PUT OFF? Putting off treatment can result in a need for more invasive treatment later in life that may not completely fix your child's smile. Early treatment is most effective for achieving lasting results. PHASE ONE A Foundation for a Lifetime of Beautiful Smiles The goal of Phase One treatment is to help the jaw develop in a way that will accommodate all of the permanent teeth and improve the way the upper and lower jaws fit together. Children often exhibit early signs of jaw problems as they grow and develop. An upper jaw that is growing too much or is too narrow can be recognized at an early age. If children over the age of six are found to have this jaw discrepancy, they are candidates for early orthodontic treatment. Also, if children around the age of eight have crowded front teeth, early treatment can prevent the need to extract permanent teeth later. Planning now can save your child's smile later - Children benefit tremendously from early-phase treatment. Receiving early treatment may prevent the removal of permanent teeth later in life, or the need for surgical procedures to realign the jaws. Making records to determine... --- - Published: 2022-07-14 - Modified: 2023-09-04 - URL: https://balhofforthodontics.com/braces-for-teens-lafayette/ Braces, retainers, and everything else that you want to know about orthodontics! You've just heard the three words that every teen dreads: “YOU NEED BRACES! ” Early Braces Treatment Lafayette Don't worry! Braces aren't nearly as scary as you may think. Braces today come in a variety of styles, materials, and colors, making life with braces much easier, more comfortable, and even more stylish than in the past. HOW LONG WILL I HAVE TO WEAR BRACES? The amount of time it takes to treat your smile with braces depends on three key factors: Early treatment — Early treatment allows orthodontists to monitor the growth of the jaw and recommend further orthodontic treatment if it becomes necessary. Not everybody receives early orthodontic treatment, and in some cases, it may be recommended that a patient wait until they are older to receive treatment. What needs correction — The amount of treatment needed to correct a problem will determine how long the process takes. Different patients react to treatments differently, so while it may take one patient only 12 months to complete their treatment, it may take another patient 24 months. Treatment times can vary depending on how quickly your body responds and how much work is needed to give you the show-stopping smile you expect. YOU! — Your willingness to use the appliances your orthodontist gives you plays a major role in the length of time it takes to complete your treatment. Always remember to take care of your braces and appliances;... --- - Published: 2022-07-14 - Modified: 2023-02-23 - URL: https://balhofforthodontics.com/adults-orthodontics-treatment-lafayette/ Orthodontic treatment is no longer just for teens. In fact, the American Association of Orthodontists states that one in five orthodontic patients is over the age of 21. Many adults are choosing to receive treatment because they understand the importance of maintaining their health, and they want to feel better about their appearance. Adults everywhere are taking advantage of the opportunity to receive orthodontic care, and now you can too. COMMON REASONS WHY ADULTS ARE CONSIDERING ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT: A bad bite or malocclusion, causing teeth to fit together incorrectly Teeth are crowded or spaced apart, possibly leading to tooth decay or gum disease Abnormal jaw pain or pressure that is caused by crooked teeth The desire for a healthier mouth and a more confident smile TREATMENT OPTIONS FOR ADULTS IN LAFAYETTE For many adults, the thought of having metal braces is enough to discourage them from receiving treatment. However, today's orthodontic treatment options offer a variety of braces and appliances that are comfortable, aesthetic, and customized to meet your needs. Types of braces include: Clear braces Ceramic braces Self-ligating braces Lingual (behind the tooth) braces Invisible braces Traditional metal braces THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ADULT ORTHODONTICS AND ORTHODONTICS FOR CHILDREN AND TEENS: The main difference between treating adults and children or teens is that the jawbones of younger patients are still developing. For adults, these bones have stopped growing, which may make orthognathic surgery possible to align the jawbones. Other differences include: Gum or bone loss (periodontal disease) — Adults are... --- - Published: 2022-07-14 - Modified: 2023-02-23 - URL: https://balhofforthodontics.com/tads-lafayette/ Temporary Anchorage Device (TAD) Temporary anchorage devices, or TADs, are small titanium anchors used in certain orthodontic cases to help achieve quicker tooth movement with more efficiency and comfort. TADs may be used in addition to braces or as an alternative to headgear. HOW ARE TADS PLACED? A strong anesthetic is used to numb the gum tissue and the jaw surrounding the area where the TAD will be placed. Once the area is numb, your doctor will gently place the TAD through the gum tissue and firmly into the jawbone. The placing of a TAD is quick and may be over before you know it. While your doctor is placing the TAD, you may feel slight pressure, but within a day, you will no longer be able to feel the TAD. Your TAD is removed once your treatment is complete, or when it is no longer needed to help straighten your teeth. Removal of a TAD is a comfortable procedure that takes just a few minutes. WHAT CAN I DO TO RELIEVE DISCOMFORT CAUSED BY MY TAD? If you do feel any discomfort from having your TADs placed, Tylenol® is recommended to help relieve your pain. If you continue to experience discomfort days after your treatment, please contact your dentist as soon as possible. HOW CAN I KEEP MY TAD CLEAN? A (TADS) Temporary Anchorage Devices Lafayette, LA can be cleaned the same way you clean your braces: by brushing your teeth at least three times a day. When your... --- - Published: 2022-07-14 - Modified: 2023-10-10 - URL: https://balhofforthodontics.com/oral-and-maxillofacial-surgery-lafayette/ Lafayette Oral and maxillofacial surgery, also known as orthognathic surgery, is the treatment choice that can correct a wide spectrum of diseases, bad bites, jaw bone abnormalities, malocclusions, injuries, and defects in the hard and soft tissues of the oral and maxillofacial region. This is one of the nine recognized dental specialties recognized by the American Dental Association. If you need surgical orthodontics, your orthodontist will work with an oral surgeon in Lafayette, LA, to ensure that you receive the best care possible. This level of care can have a dramatic and positive effect on your outlook on life, improving your bite and function, appearance, or speech. WHEN MIGHT YOU NEED SURGICAL ORTHODONTICS? Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Lafayette - can help adults with improper bites or other aesthetic concerns. The need for Lafayette surgical orthodontics occurs when the jaws do not line up correctly, and the patient cannot achieve proper biting motion and function with orthodontic treatment alone. In some cases, your upper and lower jaws may have grown at different rates. Injuries and birth defects may also affect jaw alignment. Lafayette Orthognathic surgery will help properly align the jaw, and orthodontic braces will then continue to move the teeth into their proper position. If you suffer from any of the following conditions, you may be an excellent candidate for corrective jaw surgery in Lafayette: Difficulty chewing, biting food, or swallowing Chronic jaw or jaw joint (TMJ) pain and headache Excessive wear of the teeth Open bite (space between the... --- - Published: 2022-07-14 - Modified: 2023-06-09 - URL: https://balhofforthodontics.com/invisalign-lafayette/ There’s never been a better time to straighten your teeth with the most advanced clear aligner in the world. Orthodontics (also referred to as dentofacial orthopedics) is a specialized form of dentistry focusing on the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of dental and facial abnormalities. WHAT IS AN ORTHODONTIST? An orthodontist is a dental specialist who has received two to three years of additional training and experience. Your orthodontist is able to straighten teeth, correct misaligned jaw structure, and improve the function of your smile. WHAT'S THE BEST AGE TO VISIT THE ORTHODONTIST? If you want to improve the look and feel of your smile, then any age can be a great age to see an orthodontist. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children first visit an orthodontist around the age of seven; however, Lafayette orthodontic treatment is not exclusive to children and teens, with about one in every five orthodontic patients being over the age of 21. Whether you're considering treatment for yourself or for a child, any time is a good time to visit the orthodontist. HOW CAN I TAKE CARE OF MY TEETH IF I'M WEARING BRACES OR A RETAINER? ALWAYS remember to brush your teeth after every meal and floss at least once a day. Make sure to use toothpaste that contains fluoride, and ask your orthodontist or family dentist if you need a fluoride rinse. This will help prevent cavities! If you take out your retainer to eat, make sure you brush your teeth, floss, and remember to keep it safe in its container so that... --- - Published: 2022-07-14 - Modified: 2023-05-24 - URL: https://balhofforthodontics.com/about-orthodontics/ For most people, achieving a healthy, beautiful smile is the reason for receiving orthodontic care. If you're self-conscious about your smile, correcting your concerns with braces will greatly improve the way you look and feel. When your treatment is complete, you will have the smile you've always dreamed of and the confidence to show it off! We also want you to feel comfortable and confident throughout your entire orthodontic experience, and our practice is dedicated to making sure that you receive the quality care you deserve. HOW ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT WORKS Orthodontic appliances are made of metal, ceramic, or plastic. They may be removable or they may be brackets bonded to the teeth. By placing a constant, gentle force in a carefully controlled direction, braces slowly move teeth to the proper position. Gone are the days when a metal band with a bracket was placed around each tooth. You can now choose clear or metal brackets and, in some cases, the color of your appliance. Wires are far less noticeable, and the latest materials are designed to move teeth faster with more comfort. Today, any age is a great age to wear braces! DURATION OF TREATMENT Treatment time varies and can last between one and three years, depending on several factors including age, treatment method, and how minor or severe your case is. A big factor in a successful treatment is you! The more involved and diligent you are, the more efficient your treatment will be. BRUSHING WITH BRACES IN LAFAYETTE Brush your teeth for two minutes after every meal with a soft-bristled, small-headed toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. As an alternative, you can use a powered toothbrush to increase your brushing effectiveness. Brush the outside and inside surfaces of your teeth using small, gentle, circular motions while positioning the head of the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to the gum line. Brush your teeth's chewing surfaces and the inside surface of your front teeth using short, gentle, back-and-forth motions. Pay close attention to the areas around your brackets or other appliances. FLOSSING WITH BRACES IN LAFAYETTE Flossing after every meal will help keep your teeth and braces clean, which will also help keep your treatment time on track. To floss with braces, use a floss threader or special orthodontic floss to thread the floss behind each wire. Wrap the ends of the floss around your pointer fingers of both hands, leaving a few inches of taut floss between them. Gently slide the floss between each set of teeth using a back-and-forth motion. Made of high-grade stainless steel, metal braces straighten your teeth using metal brackets and archwires. With metal braces Lafayette, you have the option of adding colored elastics (rubber bands) for a more unique and colorful smile. SELF-LIGATING BRACES LAFAYETTE Self-Ligating Braces Lafayette are made from the same materials as traditional braces. However, Lafayette self-ligating braces do not require the use of elastics, meaning fewer appointments and less friction being placed on the tooth. Lafayette Self-ligating braces come with traditional metal, ceramic, or clear brackets. They are the same size as Lafayette metal braces but use a specialized clip in place of elastics to help the archwire guide teeth to place. The clip helps reduce the amount of pressure being placed on the tooth and requires fewer adjustments because there are no elastics to replace. CLEAR BRACES LAFAYETTE Lafayette Ceramic braces are made of clear materials and are therefore less visible on your teeth than metal braces. For this reason, ceramic braces are used mainly on older teenagers and adult patients who have cosmetic concerns. While they are visually less prominent, they do require more attention to oral hygiene as ceramic braces are larger and are more brittle than their metal counterparts. For these reasons, Lafayette ceramic braces tend to be used more on upper front teeth than on lower teeth. --- - Published: 2022-07-14 - Modified: 2023-03-20 - URL: https://balhofforthodontics.com/types-of-appliances-lafayette/ ELASTICS (RUBBER BANDS) Wearing elastics (or rubber bands) improves the fit of your upper and lower teeth. Wear rubber bands as instructed, and remember that the rubber bands work far more efficiently if they're worn as prescribed. FORSUS™ The Forsus Fatigue Resistant Device is an alternative to headgear that promotes growth in adolescents, helping to eliminate excessive overbites, improve the fit of teeth, and possibly prevent the need for jaw surgery. HEADGEAR Headgear is used to treat patients whose teeth are in an overbite, with the upper jaw forward of the lower jaw, or an underbite with the lower jaw forward of the upper jaw. Headgear gently "pulls" on your teeth to restrict further forward growth of your upper teeth and jaw. HERBST® APPLIANCE The Herbst® appliance reduces overbite by encouraging the lower jaw forward and the upper molars backward. This fixed appliance is used mostly for younger, growing children and is worn for about 12-15 months. PALATAL EXPANDER The palatal expander "expands" (or widens) your upper jaw by putting gentle pressure on your upper molars each time an adjustment is made. Your orthodontist will instruct you about when and how to adjust your expander. When you achieve the desired expansion, you will wear the appliance for several months to solidify the expansion and to prevent regression. Motion Appliances Motion appliances work by applying a constant or intermittent force to the teeth, which over time, causes the teeth to move into their proper position. Finally, your braces have been removed and your smile is beautiful, straight, and best of all, metal-free! However, your orthodontic journey isn't quite completed. To keep your smile looking its best, you'll have to wear a retainer to preserve and stabilize your results. They are used after braces treatment to hold teeth in their correct alignment while the surrounding gums, bones, and muscles adjust to the new positioning of your teeth. TYPES OF RETAINERS Retainers are custom-made and can be removable or fixed. Traditional Removable Retainers typically include a metal wire that surrounds the front teeth and is attached to an acrylic arch that sits on the roof of the mouth. The metal wires can be adjusted to finish treatment and continue minor movement of the front teeth as needed. Aligner Style Retainers, or Essix Retainers Look similar to clear aligners and offer a more aesthetic alternative to wire retainers. This clear retainer may fit over the entire arch of your teeth, or only from canine to canine (clip-on retainer). It is produced from a mold of your newly aligned teeth. Fixed Retainers Lafayette consist of wires bonded behind the bottom and/or top teeth. While the device is usually required no more than a year after wisdom teeth have been extracted, it is often kept in place for life. PROS AND CONS Removable retainers can be taken out for eating and hygiene routines. Removable retainers can get lost easily,... --- - Published: 2022-07-08 - Modified: 2025-09-10 - URL: https://balhofforthodontics.com/ Our mission is to help our patients toward a more enjoyable and fulfilling life by achieving the healthy, beautiful smile they have always wanted. After months or even years of treatment, you finally get to enjoy the freedom of a beautiful, straight smile without brackets or wires. But as much as this day feels like “the finish line,” orthodontic care doesn’t end when the braces come off. The next chapter—retainer wear—is just as important for protecting the results you worked so hard to achieve. At Balhoff Orthodontics, we often remind patients that braces transform your smile, but retainers help keep it that way. Understanding what to expect during this stage can make the transition easier and ensure your smile stays as perfect as the day your braces were removed. Why Retainers Matter So Much When your braces are removed, your teeth are straight, but they’re not fully settled. Teeth are held in place by soft tissues and bone, both of which need time to adapt to their new positions. Without proper guidance, your teeth can begin to drift back toward their old alignment—a process known as relapse. This is where retainers step in. A retainer is a custom-made appliance that holds your teeth steady until your jawbone and gums “lock in” the changes. Think of it as reinforcement after the heavy lifting of braces is complete. Skipping this step, or wearing your retainer less than prescribed, can undo months of progress. The First Few Weeks The adjustment to retainers is usually smooth, but it can take a little getting used to. At first, you might notice... --- - Published: 2025-07-14 - Modified: 2025-09-29 - URL: https://balhofforthodontics.com/oral-surgery-aftercare-what-are-the-7-essential-precautions-to-a-smooth-recovery/ - Categories: Orthodontic Treatment An oral surgery procedure will be a significant step towards better dental health but the recovery process is equally essential as the procedure itself. Post-operative care after a tooth extraction, wisdom teeth extraction, or corrective jaw surgery is important to ensure that no complications occur and optimal healing takes place. Here at Balhoff Orthodontics, we hope that your healing process will be as smooth and effective as it could; you can feel as comfortable as possible. By following the appropriate measures, you can also facilitate quick recovery and resume your regular routine with minimum pain. 1. First 24 hours -Protect the Blood Clot The initial day following an oral surgery is essential in order to recover well. During the wound healing process, a clot is created to cover a wound at the place of the operation as a shield over the bone and nerves. When this kind of clot is dislodged, the condition of dry socket may appear, causing pain and slowing down the healing process, possibly necessitating further treatment. 2. Treat Swelling and Discomfort After oral surgery, swelling and slight discomfort are expected, but they can be minimized by taking the necessary measures. An ice pack on the external surface of your cheek (20-minute sessions) in the initial 24-48 hours prevents swelling. Once this time is over a warm compress can be used to stimulate circulation and can help with the discomfort. Most cases of pain can adequately be addressed by the use of over-the-counter medications such as ibuprofen,... --- - Published: 2025-05-07 - Modified: 2025-09-29 - URL: https://balhofforthodontics.com/behind-the-brackets-what-really-happens-during-your-orthodontic-checkups/ - Categories: Orthodontic Treatment When you start orthodontic treatment—whether with braces or Invisalign—you might imagine the biggest part of the process is just getting the appliances on your teeth. But in reality, the checkups you attend throughout your treatment are just as important, if not more so. These regular visits are where the real magic happens, guiding your smile transformation and ensuring everything stays on track. At Balhoff Orthodontics in Lafayette, LA, we know many patients (and parents! ) are curious about what goes on behind the scenes during these visits. Let’s take a closer look at what really happens during your orthodontic checkups—and why they matter so much. 1. Monitoring Tooth Movement One of the main goals of each checkup is to evaluate how your teeth are moving. Orthodontic treatment is a carefully timed process, and small adjustments over time lead to big results. At each visit, your orthodontist will assess whether your teeth are shifting according to plan. This involves: Comparing current tooth positions to previous records Checking progress against your customized treatment plan Making sure teeth are aligning properly and that bite correction is on track If a tooth isn’t moving as expected, your orthodontist may tweak your treatment strategy to make sure everything stays on schedule. 2. Making Necessary Adjustments This is the part of the visit that most patients are familiar with. For braces, it could mean tightening wires, changing elastics, or replacing bands. These adjustments might cause minor discomfort for a day or two, but they’re essential for... --- - Published: 2025-03-06 - Modified: 2025-09-29 - URL: https://balhofforthodontics.com/the-link-between-oral-health-and-wellness-why-a-healthy-smile-matters-in-lafayette/ - Categories: Oral Hygiene When we think about health, many of us focus on exercise, diet, and mental well-being. However, one critical aspect often gets overlooked — oral health. Our smile is one of the first things others notice, and it’s not just about aesthetics; it reflects our overall health. Common orthodontic issues, such as misaligned teeth or bite problems, can impact more than just the appearance of your smile. A healthy mouth doesn’t just mean clean teeth and fresh breath; it plays a significant role in maintaining our general well-being. In fact, the state of your oral health can influence everything from your heart health to your ability to breathe easily. Oral Health: More Than Just Teeth and Gums Oral health encompasses much more than just the appearance of your teeth. It involves the health of your gums, tongue, jaw, and the tissues in and around your mouth. A healthy mouth enables us to chew, speak, and smile comfortably. However, the consequences of poor oral hygiene extend far beyond dental issues like cavities and gum disease. The link between oral health and overall wellness is becoming more apparent with each passing year as research continues to show how our oral health impacts our entire body. The Oral-Systemic Connection The term “oral-systemic connection” refers to the link between your oral health and the health of your body. Studies have shown that poor oral health can contribute to or exacerbate several chronic health conditions. Here are some of the most notable: 1. Whether you’re considering braces for your child, a teenager, or yourself as an adult, the journey to a straighter smile often begins with one critical question: “When is the right time for braces? ” Let’s dive into the factors to consider for kids, teens, and adults when deciding on orthodontic treatment. Braces for Kids: Starting Early for Long-Term Benefits Early orthodontic intervention, often referred to as interceptive orthodontics, can help identify and address dental issues before they become more complex. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children have their first orthodontic evaluation by the age of 7. While this may seem young, early assessments allow orthodontists to: Detect potential problems like crowding, crossbites, or jaw misalignments. Guide the growth of jawbones to accommodate permanent teeth. Create more room for crowded teeth and reduce the risk of extractions later. In some cases, kids may not need braces immediately but can benefit from appliances like spacers or palatal expanders. These treatments can pave the way for a more effective braces experience in the future. Signs your child might need braces include: Early or late loss of baby teeth. Difficulty chewing or biting. Breathing through the mouth. Thumb-sucking after age 5. Crowded, crooked, or protruding teeth. By addressing these issues early, you’re setting your child up for a healthier and more confident smile as they grow. Teens are particularly conscious about their appearance, and the thought of wearing traditional metal braces can make some feel self-conscious or hesitant. Fortunately, there’s an alternative that offers both effectiveness and a more subtle look—ceramic braces. Ceramic braces are an increasingly popular choice among teens who want to straighten their teeth without drawing attention to their orthodontic treatment. With their tooth-colored brackets and more discreet appearance, ceramic braces provide a stylish solution for achieving a beautiful smile without the "metal mouth" stigma often associated with traditional braces. If you or your teen are considering braces but want something more subtle, ceramic braces may be the ideal option. What Are Ceramic Braces? Ceramic braces are a type of orthodontic appliance designed to straighten teeth using a similar system to traditional metal braces. The key difference is in the material used for the brackets. While traditional braces have metal brackets, ceramic braces use tooth-colored or clear brackets that blend in with the natural color of your teeth. This makes them much less noticeable, especially from a distance. The braces consist of three main components: Ceramic Brackets – These are the small squares or rectangular pieces that are bonded to the surface of each tooth. Ceramic brackets are made from a translucent or tooth-colored material, which makes them blend in with the teeth and appear far less noticeable than the metal... --- - Published: 2024-09-06 - Modified: 2024-09-06 - URL: https://balhofforthodontics.com/invisalign-vs-braces-which-orthodontic-treatment-is-right-for-you/ - Categories: Braces, Invisalign - Tags: braces vs Invisalign Choosing the right orthodontic treatment can significantly impact your journey to a healthier, more confident smile. With advancements in dental technology, today’s patients are presented with a range of options, including traditional braces and clear aligners. Each method has its unique benefits and considerations. To help you make an informed decision, we’ve put together an in-depth comparison of braces and clear aligners. What Are Traditional Braces? Traditional braces have been a staple in orthodontics for decades. They consist of metal or ceramic brackets that are affixed to the teeth and connected by wires and elastic bands. The orthodontist adjusts these wires periodically to guide the teeth into their correct positions. Pros of Braces: Effective for Complex Cases: Traditional braces are highly effective for addressing severe dental issues, including significant misalignments, large gaps between teeth, and complex bite problems. The system of brackets and wires can exert a greater level of force and precision, which can be crucial for intricate adjustments. Predictable Results: With a long history of use and extensive research, traditional braces offer a predictable outcome for various orthodontic issues. The treatment plan is carefully planned and monitored to ensure that the desired results are achieved. No Compliance Issues: One of the advantages of braces is that they don’t rely on patient compliance. Once the braces are in place, they continuously work on your teeth. This eliminates the risk of forgetting to wear aligners or not adhering to the treatment protocol. Cons of Braces: Aesthetic Concerns: Traditional braces can... --- - Published: 2024-07-23 - Modified: 2024-07-23 - URL: https://balhofforthodontics.com/the-importance-of-addressing-bite-problems/ - Categories: Braces, Clear Aligners, Invisalign Bite problems, also known as malocclusions, are more common than you might think. They can range from minor alignment issues to severe jaw pain that can impact your daily life. If left untreated, bite problems can lead to a host of dental and health issues. Understanding the significance of addressing these issues can help you maintain a healthy and pain-free life. In this article, we will delve into the various types of bite issues, their causes, potential health impacts, and the available treatments. Types of Bite Issues Bite issues come in several forms. Here are some common types: Overbite An overbite occurs when the upper front teeth overlap significantly with the lower front teeth. This can cause wear and tear on the teeth and may lead to jaw pain. Underbite An underbite is the opposite of an overbite. Here, the lower front teeth extend beyond the upper front teeth. This condition can affect your speech and chewing ability. Crossbite A crossbite occurs when the upper teeth do not align properly with the lower teeth. This can cause tooth wear, gum disease, and even bone loss. Open Bite An open bite happens when the upper and lower teeth do not meet when the mouth is closed. This can lead to difficulties in chewing and speech issues. Causes of Bite Alignment Problems Understanding the causes of bite problems can help in preventing them. Traditionally, open bites have been corrected with braces or even surgery. However, with advancements in dental technology, non-invasive options like Invisalign are becoming more popular for bite correction. In this article, we'll delve into how Invisalign can be used to treat an open bite, what to expect during the treatment process, and the before and after transformation. Understanding Open Bite An open bite is a type of malocclusion, or misalignment of the teeth, where the upper and lower teeth do not touch when the mouth is closed. This can occur at the front (anterior open bite) or back (posterior open bite) of the mouth. Several factors can contribute to an open bite, including thumb sucking, tongue thrusting, genetics, or temporomandibular joint (TMJ) issues. Symptoms of an Open Bite People with an open bite may notice difficulty biting into foods, speech impediments like a lisp, and an increased risk of tooth wear and tear on the teeth that do make contact. It's also common for individuals to feel self-conscious about their smile and appearance due to the visible gap between their teeth. The Role of Invisalign in Bite Correction Invisalign, a clear aligner system, has revolutionized the way dental professionals approach bite correction. Using a series of custom-made, removable aligners, Invisalign gradually shifts teeth into their proper position. The good news is, you can still chew gum with braces, but there are some important dos and don'ts to keep in mind. In this article, we'll discuss the best practices for chewing gum with braces and how to avoid any potential issues. Can You Have Chewing Gum with Braces? The short answer is yes, you can chew gum with braces. However, there are some important factors to consider before you start popping a piece of gum in your mouth. The Type of Gum Matters Not all chewing gum is created equal, especially when it comes to braces. Some types of gum can be more harmful to your braces than others. It's important to choose a gum that is soft and easy to chew, as hard or sticky gum can damage your braces or get stuck in them. Avoid gum with hard shells or fillings, as these can easily break off and get stuck in your braces. Instead, opt for sugar-free gum with a soft texture, such as Trident or Orbit. Timing is Everything When it comes to chewing gum with braces, timing is everything. It's best to wait until your braces have been on for a few months before chewing gum. This will give your teeth and braces time to adjust and settle into place. Additionally, it's important to avoid chewing gum for extended periods of time. The constant chewing motion can... --- - Published: 2023-12-28 - Modified: 2023-12-29 - URL: https://balhofforthodontics.com/orthodontic-conditions-and-the-treatments-available/ - Categories: Orthodontic Conditions Orthodontics plays a crucial role in addressing a spectrum of dental and facial irregularities that extend beyond cosmetic concerns. These conditions significantly impact daily life and oral health, prompting the need for not only aesthetically pleasing smiles but also functional and healthy bites. In certain cases, achieving optimal results requires essential collaboration between orthodontics and oral and maxillofacial surgery. This article will explore common orthodontic conditions, available treatment options, and the synergy between orthodontics and oral and maxillofacial surgery. But first, we must delve into the main spectrum of orthodontic conditions to address the synergy that exists between these two branches of dentistry. Common Orthodontic Conditions Addressing Overbite Overbite, or a deep bite, occurs when the upper front teeth excessively overlap the lower front teeth vertically. While a mild overbite is common, a pronounced one can lead to difficulties in biting, jaw pain, and speech impediments. Genetics, thumb-sucking habits, or prolonged use of pacifiers during childhood may contribute to this condition. Managing Underbite Conversely, an underbite is characterized by the lower front teeth protruding beyond the upper front teeth, causing problems with chewing, speech, and facial aesthetics. Factors such as genetics, early loss of baby teeth, or jaw irregularities can lead to this misalignment. Dealing with Crossbite A crossbite occurs when one or more upper teeth fit inside the lower teeth when the jaw is closed. This misalignment can lead to asymmetrical jaw development, causing discomfort and difficulty in chewing. Genetics or abnormal tooth eruption patterns may result in crossbites.... --- - Published: 2023-11-28 - Modified: 2023-12-07 - URL: https://balhofforthodontics.com/average-costs-of-orthodontics-with-braces-and-aligners/ - Categories: Orthodontic Treatment Can You Tell Your Orthodontist To Take Your Braces Off? Lafayette Orthodontic treatments correct bite issues, straighten teeth, and close gaps, through procedures that address the alignment and position of teeth and jaws. Nevertheless, orthodontics alone may not always be sufficient to achieve the desired cosmetic results. Therefore, a multidisciplinary approach is recommended, where orthodontics procedures integrate with cosmetic dentistry. Cosmetic dentistry involves various treatments and procedures aimed at improving the color, size, shape, alignment, and attractiveness of teeth. This discipline primarily addresses cosmetic concerns rather than functional or health issues, although some procedures may offer both cosmetic and functional benefits. For this reason, it is recommended to work in conjunction with orthodontic treatment and cosmetic dentistry, so both disciplines can optimize the overall appearance of the smile and ensure a harmonious outcome. What Are Gapped Teeth? Gapped teeth can be defined as the noticeable spaces or gaps between teeth. The size of the gap can vary in each case and may be a result of various factors such as abnormal jaw development, missing teeth, or tooth size discrepancies. But don't worry, most cases of gapped teeth, especially the upper incisors, do not typically cause significant functional issues but are primarily a cosmetic concern. Even though gapped teeth do not present major functional concerns, it is recommended to consult with a dental professional to evaluate the specific case. This way, they can assess any underlying issues, determine the best treatment approach, and... --- - Published: 2023-06-22 - Modified: 2023-06-22 - URL: https://balhofforthodontics.com/teeth-straightening-options-in-adult-orthodontics/ - Categories: Adult Treatment, Orthodontic Treatment At times, patients looking for adult orthodontics get overwhelmed by the fact they never had the chance or the initiative to get braces when they were younger. You have refreshed opportunities to straighten your teeth now that you have new knowledge. Moreover, if you have crooked teeth or a facial asymmetry but have little understanding of the many benefits orthodontics brings to your life, we will tell you some of them right here: Orthodontics helps you have straight teeth that are easier to clean, favoring oral hygiene and health, which thus prevents tooth decay, cavities, and gums (periodontal) disease. A malocclusion is a bad or erroneous match of a bite. An improper bite can cause unwanted teeth to wear due to unbalanced contact, producing more friction in some parts of a tooth and less friction in others. Unwanted friction compromises a tooth o several teeth structures which might break and represent costly reparative treatments later. Some severe overbite or underbite problems might also reveal a facial asymmetry or disproportion that could affect the patient's facial profile. By addressing malocclusions (misalignments), orthodontic treatment helps create a harmonious bite and a balanced facial profile. Proper occlusion is essential for several reasons. First, it enhances oral function, allowing efficient chewing and biting, which aids in digestion. Additionally, it promotes healthy jaw joint function, reducing the risk of jaw pain and headaches. Orthodontic treatment aligns the teeth and jaws, correcting issues such as overcrowding, spacing, crossbite, overbite, and underbite. By applying gentle and controlled forces, orthodontic appliances, such as braces or aligners, gradually shift the teeth into their optimal positions. This realignment improves occlusion, ensuring that the upper and lower teeth fit together correctly, promoting even pressure distribution during biting and chewing. Moreover, orthodontics contributes to overall oral health. Straighter teeth are easier to clean, reducing the risk of plaque buildup, tooth decay, and gum disease. It can also improve speech clarity, as misalignments can sometimes affect pronunciation. So, by seeking orthodontic treatment, individuals can achieve improved occlusion, leading to better oral health and function. What Is Preventive Orthodontic Treatment? Orthodontic treatment focuses on prevention and intercepting or addressing potential orthodontic issues before they become more severe. By identifying and correcting early signs of malocclusion or abnormal dental development, preventive orthodontics aims to minimize the need for extensive orthodontic treatment later in life. Through the use of orthodontic appliances, such as braces or retainers, a preventive treatment can guide the growth and alignment... --- - Published: 2023-03-31 - Modified: 2023-03-31 - URL: https://balhofforthodontics.com/when-do-i-need-oral-surgery/ - Categories: Orthodontic Treatment Maybe when you hear about maxillofacial surgery, you think of Hollywood stars who modify their jaws to change their shape. You are not too far from the point, but in this article, we will talk of oral surgery from a medical point of view. Maybe you went to the dentist for your annual cleaning and dental examination and ended up with the recommendation of seeing an oral surgeon to fix some issue with your mandible. Or you went straight to investigate maxillofacial surgery because you noticed a problem with your jaw. Regardless of the case, you need to know what orthognathic surgery implies, why you need it, and how it can help you. So let's start with the health and oral implications of jaw symmetry. When it comes to teeth and mandibles, good looks are a matter of health rather than appearance. And we say this because straight teeth and symmetrical jaws usually make your dental health and well-being a lot easier. If you ever wore traditional braces or any orthodontic appliance, you have probably heard the term "malocclusion" Malocclusion occurs when your teeth do not occupy their correct position in your mouth, leading to general teeth misalignment. And the name malocclusion responds to another dental term, occlusion. Occlusion refers to how your mandible and maxilla encounter to close your teeth and mouth. In case you didn't know, the occlusion of our jaws interferes with how we speak, chew, bite, and do everything with our mouths. But traditional braces pretty much work without relying too much on the patient. This is true for all orthodontic appliances, including Invisalign clear aligners, which you should wear for most of your day. In the case of traditional metal braces, they sit in your mouth and straighten your teeth while you live your life. However, patient compliance will always be paramount in any treatment plan. Chewing, talking, and everything you do that requires using your mouth will remain the same, with or without braces. Avoiding certain foods and textures does not have to mean avoiding delicious recipes or your favorite dishes. As a patient with orthodontic braces, you can eat almost anything you want. To let your metal or ceramic braces do their job, you have to be careful with hard or sticky foods and sugary foods, of course. Chewing these types of edibles could result in a loose bracket or a loose-poking wire. When you do your duty as an orthodontic patient, your treatment goes much faster and easier. Patient compliance is something you do for yourself, not for your doctor. Diet Restrictions During Braces When you lose a bracket, your orthodontist will fix it on the next visit you have without any trouble. But when you have one or more loose brackets or archwires, your treatment plan is not advancing as it should. As a matter of fact, your teeth can move... --- - Published: 2023-01-06 - Modified: 2023-02-27 - URL: https://balhofforthodontics.com/early-interceptive-orthodontic-treatment-for-your-child/ - Categories: Orthodontic Emergencies, Orthodontic Treatment, Teenage Treatment While anyone can get orthodontic treatment done, kids and teenagers have a massive advantage over adults and seniors. Not only do younger patients heal much quicker and thus have fewer chances of losing their results, but they can also avoid lengthy and invasive treatments with an interceptive treatment if they visit their orthodontist for an evaluation soon enough. Why Is Orthodontic Evaluation Important for Children? Early orthodontic evaluation in children is crucial in detecting orthodontic issues that are present or are developing. Noticing any teeth or jaw-related problems at a young age can help avoid or diminish the amount of treatment needed later on. The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recommends parents take their children to an orthodontist as soon they notice an orthodontic condition. Even if parents don't see any problems present, the AAO recommends taking them for their first check-up at age seven at most. Receiving orthodontic evaluation allows orthodontists to perform a two-phase orthodontic treatment if necessary. Such treatment could help fix a variety of issues like crowded teeth, crooked teeth, spaced teeth, or even malocclusions, also known as bad bites, such as underbites or crossbites. What Is the Purpose of Interceptive Orthodontic Treatment? Taking a child for an early orthodontic evaluation and unveiling present and developing problems allows orthodontists to draft a treatment plan for the orthodontic patient if needed. Remember that orthodontists will only recommend two-phase treatment to those who will substantially benefit from it. A few examples of possible benefits from interceptive treatment are... --- - Published: 2022-12-15 - Modified: 2023-02-27 - URL: https://balhofforthodontics.com/all-about-orthodontic-appliances/ - Categories: Orthodontic Appliances While everyone should know that making your kid use orthodontic devices from a young age can either simplify orthodontic treatment or completely avoid it in the future, not all people are lucky enough to have gone through the process. So what can you do to avoid committing the same mistakes with your kids, and what appliances can you use if, as an adult, you wish to better your own smile? What Is Two-Phase Treatment? As the name implies, Two-Phase treatment takes place at two different points in the life of a patient. The objective of this multi-stage orthodontic treatment is to prevent and fix orthodontic issues that a child may present or may be developing at a young age. The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recommends taking your children to an orthodontist at 7 years old at most. At this age, orthodontists are able to identify the issues present and decide whether the patient requires the two-phase treatment or not. Typically, phase one starts when the child patient has most of their baby teeth and a few permanent ones. During this period, orthodontists use different orthodontic appliances to ensure that there will be enough space for permanent teeth to erupt. According to the AAO, taking action during this early stage can help prevent the need for tooth removal, corrective surgery, and more. Phase two includes more typical orthodontic treatments like braces and retainers. The treatments in this stage will begin after a resting period from phase one, usually when the... --- - Published: 2022-11-16 - Modified: 2023-12-11 - URL: https://balhofforthodontics.com/is-it-worth-it-to-remove-wisdom-teeth-and-get-braces/ - Categories: Children Orthodontics, Orthodontic Treatment Metal braces or traditional braces are one of the most common orthodontics treatments; however, there are many myths and lies around them. People tend to mix their experiences with personal beliefs that are often misleading. In this case, you should take your doubts and worries to an expert, dentist, and orthodontist. Only your doctors should answer specific questions about orthodontic appliances, dental treatments, and dental care. Are you willing to submit yourself to losing one or more of your teeth to have the perfect smile of your dreams? You probably are. It’s OK; your denture won’t stop working because your dentist took out a tooth. That is the answer to the question; it is up to you to decide if the dental treatment is worth it. Again, it can be beneficial for you. Traditional braces correct misalignments, crooked teeth, overbites, and underbites. All of these can result in oral health problems for you, such as difficulty in cleaning your mouth and brushing your teeth, mandible and palate problems, pain, et cetera. So, when you must go through an orthodontic procedure to treat these issues, we can say that it is worth the effort. Why Are Teeth Extractions Needed? That being said, if your orthodontist suggests tooth extractions, it is probably justified and beneficial to your oral health. However, the final word on the matter has to be yours. In some patients, teeth extraction is needed to move forward with an orthodontic procedure like getting metal brackets. We, adults, usually have... --- - Published: 2022-07-28 - Modified: 2024-03-07 - URL: https://balhofforthodontics.com/what-is-invisalign-teen/ - Categories: Orthodontic Appliances Balhoff Orthodontics discusses Invisalign Teen and whether it may be right for your teenager. Every orthodontic journey starts in the same place - with a complimentary consultation. This visit is important because it will determine if you or your child could benefit from orthodontics and, if so, what treatment may be the best. When should you have your first orthodontic visit? The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children have their first visit at seven years old. Seven is an ideal time because children typically have a combination of baby teeth and some permanent teeth. It also allows the orthodontist to see how the jaws are growing. But don’t worry if your child is past that age - orthodontics can happen at any age. Nearly one in five orthodontic patients today is over the age of 21. So even if you never had orthodontics as a child but are interested now, there is still time. What happens at the first appointment? Several things happen at the first appointment.
