Frequently Asked Questions
What is an orthodontist?
What is orthodontics?
Orthodontics is the field of dental health that diagnoses treats, and aims to prevent jaw malocclusions and dental malalignment. Just as any other dental health specialty, it focuses on specifics of a person’s orofacial structures to improve their dental health and overall health. In the case of orthodontics, we achieve this with a treatment that realigns your teeth and achieves an ideal relationship between jaws.
When should orthodontic treatment be started?
Ideally, patients should first visit an orthodontist by age 7. Correcting your dental alignment is much easier during your teenage years because your orthodontist can leverage the natural movements bones and teeth make during that time. Adults can still make the most out of this specialized care starting as soon as they can.
What can go wrong with orthodontic treatment?
Every patient’s journey is unique. Orthodontists develop treatment plans that are safe for your teeth. However, when patients don’t follow their orthodontist’s recommendations, they can cause orthodontic emergencies, delay their treatment, or fail to achieve their desired results. Make sure you talk to your orthodontist to manage your expectations about treatment.
How can I take care of my teeth if I'm wearing braces or a retainer?
You should still continue to visit your general dentist frequently. Your dental hygiene is critical to the success of any orthodontic treatment. Similarly, you can consult with your orthodontist if you require help from an endodontist or other specialist for a root canal, dental crown, dental extraction, or more.
What's the best age to visit the orthodontist?
The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recommends parents take their children to an orthodontist around age 7 because they can take advantage of their mixed dentition and ensure that permanent teeth erupt properly aligned.
